CESJET Calls For Improved Maritime Sector Funding

In a press briefing which coincides with the World Maritime Day 2021, the Executive Secretary of the Centre for Social Justice Equity and Transparency (CESJET) Ikpa Isaac has urged Secondary School students to show interest in the maritime sector and choose courses that are related to it.

The CESJET, while appealing to the Federal Government towards increased funding of the few Maritime institutions in the country, also urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to extend economic recovery intervention to the maritime sector most especially at this time the the government is looking into diversification of the economy.

He also stated that as the Central Bank of Nigeria has intervened in agriculture and other sectors, he was pleading to the Central Bank to look into the maritime sector to revive the nation’s economy.

“People should be more interested in orientation and funding of the few Maritime Academies in Nigeria in order for them to have qualitative education to meet international standards.

“With such, the Sustainable Development Goals, SDG target will smoothly link to the promotion of a resilient Maritime sector in Nigeria and also promoting seafaring as a career for all including women in particular, the Maritime Academy of Nigeria would be graduating the best seafarers in not just Africa but the world.

“It is in the light of the above therefore, that we join in the pursuit to improving the funds capacity of the industry”.
Ikpa said.
