The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has appointed Hon. Engr. Ikenna Adikibe, the Executive Chairman of Oru West Local Government Area in Imo State, as the new Deputy National President of the Association.
The appointment, which was ratified during the ALGON NEC meeting held on July 16–17, 2025, at Zuma Hill Resort, Niger State, fills an existing vacancy and is expected to further strengthen the leadership and operational capacity of the Association at a time when grassroots governance is receiving renewed national attention.
According to the official communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, ALGON described Engr. Adikibe as a seasoned administrator with a wealth of experience. “Hon. (Engr.) Ikenna Adikibe will bring along his over 30 years of administrative acumen and capacity development sagacity to bear on the Association,” the statement read.
His appointment is seen as aligning with the policy direction of the current ALGON leadership under National President Hon. Engr. Bello Lawal, with a focus on delivering impactful results at the local government level.
In his acceptance speech, the newly appointed Deputy National President expressed deep gratitude to those who supported his emergence. “I thank His Excellency, Governor Hope Uzodimma, for being a great leader and source of inspiration,” he said.
Engr. Adikibe also extended appreciation to the ALGON National President, Hon. Engr. Bello Lawal; the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Chief Odunayo Ategbero; as well as the NEC members, BOT members, and ALGON management and staff. “Your unwavering trust and support have strengthened my resolve to contribute meaningfully to this great Association,” he stated.
Pledging unwavering loyalty to the leadership and stakeholders, he assured members of his readiness to work collaboratively to advance ALGON’s objectives. “I pledge my loyalty to our leaders and stakeholders and remain committed to delivering measurable results that will improve service delivery and governance at the grassroots,” he added.
The ALGON NEC meeting, attended by representatives from the 36 states and FCT, development partners, and key national health agencies, also reaffirmed the Association’s strategic focus on grassroots healthcare, decentralization of services, and partnership-driven development.
With Engr. Adikibe’s appointment, stakeholders believe ALGON is better positioned to implement reforms and initiatives aimed at enhancing the performance of Nigeria’s 774 local government councils.
The NEC concluded by adopting the full communiqué and restating its commitment to good governance, inclusiveness, and sustainable development at the third tier of government.
