A coalition of political parties in Nigeria under the aegis of Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP), South West, has thrown its weight behind the candidature of President Goodluck Jonathan, who is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in this month’s presidential election.

The Secretary General of CNPP in South West, Rev. Austin Nnorom, made this known at a press briefing in Lagos yesterday, ending speculations over the position of the unbrella body of political parties in Nigeria.

Nnorom, who who expressed confidence that Jonathan will be voted massively in the zone, maintained that the group of parties was solidly behind the presidential aspiration of Jonathan.

He assured that CNPP was ready to work with him in the six states of the South West to ensure his victory.

Explaining why the body adopted the incumbent president, he said: “Our reasons for adopting Jonathan is very clear. This is a man who has not been a noise maker but has been able to deliver on most of the electioneering promises he made.

“Looking at the things on ground, we have no doubt that if given another four years, the Jonathan government will transform this country.”

According to him, the present government has made visible impacts in all the sectors of the economy, particularly in areas such as transportation and agriculture.

“We don’t want the gains we have made under this government as a country to be eroded.

“The man the opposition is parading as an agent of change is an unrepentant dictator who does not mean well for the country,” he added.

Aplauding the anti-graft efforts of Jonathan administration, he noted that it had put structures in place to mitigate the menace in the country.

“This government has eliminated corruption in the salary of civil servants. It has eliminated corruption in fertiliser distribution and also in the pension scheme.

“The president has given anti-corruption agencies a free hand to perform their responsibilities rather than using them to persecute political opponents.

“So, it is unfair for anybody to claim that this government is not fighting corruption,” he said.

Nnorom insisted that the president had also demonstrated that he was a true democrat by his actions and utterances.

“Jonathan has put up a campaign of one man, one vote. Credible elections were conducted in Edo, Osun, Ekiti and Anambra States under his watch.

“We believe strongly with the feelers from our constituencies that he will be returned as president come March 28”, he said.

Some officials of the body at the briefing were CNPP leaders in the region, including Chief Kunle Adeyoyin, Otunba Femi Soluade, Amb. Akin Badejogbin, Alhaji Oladele Mudashiru, among others.

Also present were representatives of Sout East CNPP leaders led by Chief Emeka Chigbo and Dr. Eke Uka.
