#NigeriaDecides: Police Arrest INEC Officials, Party Agents in Sokoto Over Electoral Offences

police vanThe Nigerian Police have arrested six suspected electoral offenders including officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), party agents in Sokoto State.

Zone 10 Police Command, comprising Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states said it arrested the six suspects over alleged electoral offences in Zamfara.

Mr. Bala Hassan, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of the zone, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday that the suspects were arrested in Maradun Local Government area of the state during the conduct of Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections in the state.

He said that the police in the zone would continue to ensure strict compliance with the Electoral Act to ensure credible elections.

The AIG commended the people in the states under his supervision for conducting themselves peacefully during the election.

However, with just hours to the 2015 presidential election, officials of the Sokoto State command of the Department of State Security (DSS) in another operation arrested some chieftains of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Those arrested, according reports include Alhaji Mu’azu Zabira, the chairman of the APC’s Security Committee, while the home of another APC chieftain, Alhaji Ummarun Kwabo, was raided, during which Alhaji Abubakar Kani was arrested.

Recall that no fewer than 164 political thugs from both the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) were recently arrested in the same state after a rampage.

The state command Public Relations Officer, Al- Mustapha Sani, had disclosed that the suspected political thugs were arrested for destroying party offices and other properties, during the rampage.
