Following the extension of the Bank Verification Number (BVN) exercise to 31st October, 2015, hundreds of persons with disabilities also known as physically challenged persons have protested being discriminated against in the exercise, Daily Trust reports.

The protesters under the banner of the Centre For Citizens With Disabilities (CCD) in Abuja decried the manner in which the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and other Nigerian Banks have systematically exclude them in the verification exercise.

Executive Director of the CCD, David Anyaele, who spoke on behalf of the group said the CBN and the Nigerian banks discriminated against people with disabilities by not making banking halls accessible and which has hindered them from participating in the BVN exercise.

“We are worried that CBN and Nigerian Banks are yet to remove barriers hindering persons with disabilities from the participation in banking activities due to limited access to banking halls as the oval doors at the banks discriminating against persons on wheelchairs and clutches.

“We therefore condemn in strongest terms the CBN and Nigerian Banks discrimination against persons with disabilities in the biometric registration of bank customers due to lack of access to banking halls. We call for continuous biometric registration of bank customers without deadline to ensure proper capturing of all Nigeria bank customers irrespective of ability and disability,” Anyaele said
