Maiduguri-Damaturu Highway Taken Over By Boko Haram, Kill Villagers
Despite relocation of military high command to Maiduguri on orders of President Muhammadu Buhari as a measure to end wanton killing of innocent Nigerians, reports have emerged, indicating, that the more emboldened Boko Haram insurgents have taken over the Maiduguri-Damaturu expressway, after attacking Ngamdu village and killed 10 persons in the community.
Travellers on the route were being asked to return as the terrorists have taken over a portion of the highway between Benisheik, a town 85km away from Maiduguri and Ngamdu, 35km away from Damaturu.
According to reports, there were no security checkpoints between Benisheik and Ngamdu, which is about 25km stretch of road.
“As I am talking to you now, soldiers are moving towards Benisheik, while we are here asking motorists to return to Maiduguri until the road is cleared,” a police officer, stationed in one of the villages in the area was quoted by Premium Times.
Boko Haram militants had early June launched a renewed attack on Maiduguri, just days after the military repelled an assault on the Borno State capital city.
