sex in pregnancy

As Written By Clement Ehis Iuleomien
Pregnancy is something most couples look forward to, given that procreation is one of the fundamental objectives of the marriage institution. Pregnancy comes with its many challenges and changes. Hormonal, anatomic, psychological and physical changes are glaring on the part of the woman during pregnancy.
So many a couple are always at loss as to the health safety of engaging in sexual activities as there are so many myths associated with sex during pregnancy; ranging from those that say it causes premature labour to that it is capable of harming the unborn baby.

Normal sexual intercourse between couples can continue during pregnancy as long as the pregnancy is healthy and devoid of complications. The baby is housed in the uterus (womb) with very strong muscles, also there is a thick mucus plug that seals the cervix (neck of the womb), which protects the baby from infections.
The amniotic sac filled with fluid which surrounds the baby also serve as further protection for the baby. It is therefore safe for couples to engage in sex during pregnancy.

There are however some circumstances under which couples are advised against sex during pregnancy, some of the circumstances are: a woman with a history of miscarriages, a woman with a weak cervix, and a woman that has a low-lying placenta – this is to prevent the sudden detachment of the placenta (placental previa).
Other circumstances include a woman that experiences bleeding or spotting during pregnancy and a woman with a tendency of having her amniotic sac ruptured prematurely.

Having established this, it is important for men to be more caring and sensitive to the plight of their women during pregnancy.
Most pregnant women experience pregnancy related conditions such as nausea, vomiting, swollen feet, dizziness, etc. These conditions may completely put them off the mood for sex.
Therefore if the woman is not favorably disposed to sex during pregnancy, the man should understand and support the woman lovingly.

Sex during pregnancy should be quite different from other periods, the man should be more careful and gentle on the woman during sex.
Sex Positions/STDs
Another key area is that of sex positions, as the pregnancy advances, the traditional missionary (man-on-top) position becomes uncomfortable for the woman, while the side-by-side (spooning) position becomes most appropriate and comfortable, especially at the second and third trimesters of pregnancy.
Men practicing oral sex on their wives should also avoid blowing air into her vagina as it could lead to the woman developing air embolus, which could be fatal.

Couples should as much as possible prevent the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) during pregnancy. The use of condoms is encouraged to prevent the man from infecting his partner during pregnancy.
STD, such as gonorrhea, could lead to blindness of the baby during delivery if the infection is not properly treated.
By and large, it is concluded by medical experts that safe sex during pregnancy has no gross health effect, provided the pregnancy is healthy and free of any form of complications.
There is the need to always consult your doctor for advice on all medical issues.
