Post Master-General Resigns As Buhari Meets NIPOST, Ministry Of Communication Officials
Nigeria’s Post Master General of the Federation, Ibrahim Baba, has retired from the Nigeria Postal Service (NIPOST).
His exit came Tuesday, even as President Buhari met with officials from NIPOST and the ministry of communication at Aso Villa
Speaking to journalist in Abuja, Baba lamented that non-usage of postage stamps by financial institutions made the country to lose N1 trillion every year.
According to Baba, NIPOST, under his leadership, was able to intercept 258,207 scam mails worth N125.2 billion between 2006 and 2014.
He said, “NIPOST was able to intercept the fraudulent documents through collaboration with security agencies like the Nigeria Police and Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.’’
Baba added that during his tenure, NIPOST also collaborated with National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Department of State Service (DSS), Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) and the National Crime Agency of the United Kingdom.
According to him, ICT is not a threat to NIPOST but rather a blessing as it is impacting positively on postal operations and services.
“Our desire to make the post office a one-stop shop motivated us to adopt new technologies to enhance postal operations in terms of speed and efficiency in service delivery.
“It is also a means of capturing new business opportunities provided by e-commerce and other electronic and financial services’’, he said, adding that 70% of post offices across the country were equipped with ICT facilities, including track and trace features.
He said: “One thing that has been bordering us very seriously, which I believe the 8th National Assembly (NASS) will address is the Postal Reform Bill aimed at commercializing our operations and service. Government’s desire to commercialize the Postal sector has been on since the 1990s when NIPOST was given some autonomy to operate.”
