Benue Bans Okada Over Ortom’s Security Aide Murder
The Benue State Government has restricted the activities of commercial motorcyle operators, popularly known as Okada, in the state over the killing of the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Security to Governor Samuel Ortom, Mr. Denen Igbana.
Igbana was allegedly killed by gunmen on a motorcycle.
The State Government announced a ban on commercial motorcyclists in Makurdi between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. from Saturday.
Governor Ortom who made this known while addressing newsmen at the Benue Peoples House, Makurdi, urged security agencies to carry out full investigation into the murder, stressing that anyone found culpable will be made to face the consequences of their actions.
Igbana was said to have been killed along Tionsha Settlement, a suburb of Makurdi, while on his way from an official assignment.
According to eyewitnesses, Igbana jumped down from the vehicle, after he was ambushed, and tried to escape, but was overpowered by the gunmen who shot him multiple times.
“He was rushed to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital in Makurdi but later died,”
One of the community leaders in the area, Thomas Ayakpam, also narrated how the incident happened.
“The assailants waylaid the late security aide on his way back home in the night and sprayed bullets on his Nissan Hilux,” he said. “They shot him severally, giving him no chance to survive.”
“We could not come out to rescue him because we were scared, as they seem to be many and the shots they fired shook the whole community to its foundation,” he said.
Following the murder, Governor Ortom has directed security operatives to carry out full investigation into the incident and fish out the assailants.
