Ovation was very high at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Awka Road, Onitsha in Anambra State recently as the member representing Onitsha North 1 Constituency and the Deputy Minority Whip in the Anambra State House Of Assembly, Hon. (Barr.) Douglas Nwachukwu Egbuna fondly called Osite presented a cheque of N2, 000, 000. 00 (Two Million Naira Only) to the church, for the purpose of Boosting the Business Of Well Identified Female Petty Traders in Onitsha North 1 Constituency, whose businesses need urgent funding to come back.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker had during his campaign for the Anambra State House of Assembly seat to represent Onitsha North 1 Constituency, promised the St. Mary’s Catholic Church congregants that if he gets elected, he will among other things make available the sum of N2, 000, 000. 00 for well identified the petty traders.
The business support fund will be managed and supervised by the Church Authorities on his behalf as part of their humanitarian services to humanity, in order to make ensure the fund was not politicised.
The fulfilment of the promise was timely following the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on many businesses.
Hon. Egbuna who has been nicknamed “Talk and Do Legislator Per Excellence”, especially during this hard times women carry most of the brunts of their respective households, such that their children and husbands fall back to them for feeding most of the times.
In his remark, Rev. Fr. JohnBosco Okafor described Hon. Egbuna as a special politician he has known “as a promise keeper” both in politics and personal life.
According to the Parish Priest- Rev. Fr. JohnBosco Okafor also known as Osite “Bụ ekwu eme”.
The parish priest of St. Mary’s Catholic Church Onitsha, in the presence of the very elated congregation, immediately announced the appointment of the Vice Chairman of the church’s parish council- Barr. Ikeme to head the committee that has been set up for the most effective and efficient disbursement of the fund to female petty traders in Onitsha North 1 State Constituency, irrespective of the religious affiliation of the would be individuals that need them.
Hon. Egbuna received outpouring encomiums from the parishioners when the church service ended, with the chant of “Osite ga eje ọzọ” on the lips of the congregants as they headed home.
