Jigawa LG Polls: ALGON National President Hails Governor Muhammed Badaru

ā€¦Elated As Jigawa LGAs Join Democratically Elected System

As a result of last Saturday’s successful Jigawa State Local Government elections, the National President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Hon Alabi Kolade David has commended Governor Mohammed Badaru Abubakar of the state for heeding to the popular cry of the good people of the State and Nigeria at large to conduct local governments election in the State.

Alabi stated this while answering questions fielded by Airport correspondents in Lagos yesterday.

He said that in the last six months, ALGON’s advocacy and nationwide Campaign for a Democratically elected officials has been productive as over six states have conducted their respective local government elections.

He said that such development has gone a long way to demonstrate the valid acceptance of the system as popular will of the people.

He praised the Nigerian Governor’s Forum and said that as more and more Governor’s are showing stronger commitment through a mass return of the Local Governments and Councils through a democratically elected system, Nigerians are in for better desired leadership that will truly guarantee development with ample safeguards of law and order, as such will no doubt engender maximum service delivery to the people.

The National President added that “even, the insecurity that is affecting every parts of the country can be nipped in the bud through the Local Governments if the Community Policing, which ALGON has continued to promote, is given political will and approved as vital part of the Constitution Amendment”.

He used the opportunity to urge remaining states that are still running their local government system with caretaker officials to have a rethink and save the system as enshrined in Section 7 (1) of the 1999 Constitution (as Amended).

The National President also stated that in a situation where some states are having their Council elections hindered by litigations, they should explore other easier option of amicably resolving them amongst the parties and Arms of Government at a roundtable to enable their people actively participate in rural governance through the electoral process.
