Enugu LG Election: ENSIEC Should Remain Unbiased As Ndị-Enugu Prepare To Vote, Says Hon. Solomon Onah
Ahead of the next week’s scheduled Local Government election in Enugu State, the Present Mayor who is the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Hon. Solomon Izuchukwu Onah has stated that despite all efforts so far put in place at mobilising the rural populace across the 17 Local Government Areas in the State by his party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), it was important to remind the Enugu State State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) of one of its cardinal responsibilities which he said is the need to keep to the rules devoid of sides.
The Chairman of all the Chairmen in the State, who also is the National Publicity Secretary of ALGON and the incumbent Chairman of Udenu Local Government Area, also pointed out that Enugu State has a peculiar pattern of guarding against unpopular politicians who do not have grassroots appeal and acceptance.
He said that many parties in the state that apply a top-down approach and keep an elite-driven posture in Enugu State have made it possible that winning elections by the ruling party in the state is sacrosanct.
Hon. Onah affirmed that the party’s campaign across all the Local Governments, with the exceptional Party leadership and architecture in the State is providing ample opportunity for more effective access to the people in line with Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi administration’s leadership style.
The Council boss said that it was also designed as a matter of necessity focussing most of their mobilization efforts on mass appeals as well as managing its visible outcome with both the party structure, the mass media, the civil society and other evidence-based platforms like town unions, community groups, religious bodies, who are commending the process.
In his words “our party, the PDP is consolidating on our gains in the last 2 years of service delivery and quality representation, providing linkages to mobilise voters at the grassroots.
“We are mobilising them to rallies and to go to the polls to close all gap and ensure massive electoral participation”, Hon. Onah said.
Continuing, he added that “In our state which has it’s voting pattern, it’s priorities and unique approach, it has been entrenching for years strategies of inclusive campaign in our local leadership recruitment process which encourages everyone in mobilising for quality representation.
“It is no more an elitist, middle or upper-class decision but for rural voters that take ownership of the process”.
“Don’t forget that one of our primary concerns in the PDP is not just winning elections but recruiting the right persons to serve.
“I thank His Excellency, Rt. Hon Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for his support to the promotion of grassroots governance ensuring equity, justice and his pragmatic approach enthrone progress within the heterogeneous political mix of the state and its power distribution”, Hon. Onah said.
