Nsukka Face-lift: Save Enugu Group Tackles Governor Ugwuanyi’s Critics, Carpets Ex-Leaders from Zone
A renowned sociopolitical pressure group and advocate for good governance, the Save Enugu Group (SEG) has commended Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for uplifting Nsukka zone, saying that under the current administration in Enugu State, Enugu North Senatorial District is getting fare share of dividend of democracy.
The SEG, in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Chief Willy Ezugwu, noted that “for the first time, Nsukka has motorable internal roads, ending the reign of dusts and incessant flooding in most parts of the university town.”
The group which spoke on the heels of criticisms and rumour making the rounds that the Governor has not done anything tangible in Nsukka, said that “for the first time, the zone is having a son in government who has thought of developing the area.
“Yes, we want more, just like every part of the state, but the fact is that Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has done what no Nsukka representative in government at any level has ever achieved.
“The zone had had ministers Senators and House Of Representatives members who have not attracted any government presence to Enugu North, yet some people can sit down and criticise the administration just to score cheap political points, overlooking their own failures when they had the opportunity.
“Yes, for good governance to thrive, we must criticise the administration in power to enable them do better but not when it is irrelevant.
“This is not the first time Nsukka is producing a Governor of the state, Senators and House of Representatives members, but none of them remembered that Nsukka is their home and constituency and needs development.
“It was Governor Ugwuanyi’s uncompromising desire to touch lives as a member of the House of Representatives that endeared him to the people, such that immediately he was nominated by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as their governorship candidate in 2015, majority of Enugu State residents, irrespective of political party, queued behind his candidature.
“It was his personality and leadership style that virtually brought opposition politics to all time low in Enugu State because good works of the administration speak for the government.
“For the avoidance of doubt, those who are antagonising the Governor besed on his democratic dividend to Nsukka should note that before him, there was no motorable roads in Nsukka as a whole.
“The all-important road, the Opi – Nsukka road, remained almost impassable until Governor Ugwuanyi’s administration fixed it.
“Governor Ugwuanyi is known all over the state for opening up rural areas, scaling up the upgrading of urban areas to meet up with other parts of the globe.
“In doing so, he has treated all parts of Enugu State equally, unlike what was obtainable in the past, where Nsukka was excluded in state government plans by other zones.
“We recall that at the last check, the Governor Ugwuanyi administration had embarked on the rehabilitation of numerous internal roads in the University town of Nsukka, including Amaeze Street outflow to Enugu Road catchment box culvert and the New Anglican Road to Obechara Road junction in Nsukka, the Nsukka Township Stadium (Phase One), upgrading of several hospital facilities in the zone, the State Secretariat Annex in Nsukka, the 10-unit Guest Houses, 14 new Court Buildings and Open Registries in the Judicial Divisions and Magisterial Districts across the state, 34 Customary Courts, two per local government area, and the first-ever Enugu State Customary Court of Appeal Headquarters complex as well as the Court of Appeal Annex in Enugu, just to mention a few.
The peace and security we enjoy in Enugu State is unquantifiable. To achieve that, the government embarked on critical security measures, including the procurement of over 300 units of bicycles to complement 260 vehicles as well as motorcycles purchased by the state government for Forest Guards’ operations in the rural areas, in the 260 electoral wards in the state leading to better security engagement.
“For want of space, we cannot name all the legacy projects across the state and Nsukka in particular, including the construction of the first Enugu Underpass/Flyover at Nike Lake Resort/Nike Road T-junction, Enugu, an infrastructure which is beneficial to Nsukka zone; establishment of small and medium scale industries in the 17 LGAs; construction of the Adada Campus of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), completion of the construction, landscaping, and furnishing of the International Conference Center (ICC), Enugu, the Ukpabi-Ugbele-Ajima-Nsukka road project, ongoing Eha-Ndi-Agu road project, Milken hill road project, Ngwo -Enugu, among others”,
“No former government official, Senator or Reps member from Enugu North should criticise the Ugwuanyi administration as they all failed to uplift the zone when they had the opportunity to do even better for the zone”, the group said.
