Incessant National Grid Collapse Will Mar President Muhammadu Buhari’s Legacy – Says HURIWA
The Human Rights Writers Association Of Nigeria (HURIWA) has admonished President Muhammadu Buhari over concern about the quality of the legacy/legacies he intends to bequeath to Nigeria and Nigerians by next year May 2023 when he exits office.
HURIWA in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, said that President Muhammadu Buhari should ask himself one question: Do I want to exit public office honorably or dishonorably?
“If his response is affirmative, then he has to fix the electricity power sector and justify the so called multi-billion dollars investment he claims to have made in electricity sector in the last seven years.
“If on the other hand he refuses and can not fix the power sector after making claims of humongous investments, then he should get set for post tenures’ litigation because we can assure him that he wouldn’t have peave of mind upon retirement if this incessant electricity power national grid collapses are not permanent tamed.
“Let the government know that these serial power failures has sent millions of people in the small and medium scale economic group out of jobs and these persons won’t fold their hands and let President Muhammadu Buhari enjoy any kind of retirement.
“The President should either fix the broken down electricity infrastructure or demand immediate refunds from the contractors that got mobilise to fix the power sector but disappeared into thin air. It is better that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration settles this evil case of deliberate sabotage of the electricity power sector by his key officials or be ready for the coming fight to finish after his tenures next May”, the rights group said.
According HURIWA, the constant electricity power national grid collapses is particularly and spectacularly scandalous.
“The stench of these serial scandals will outlive president Muhammadu Buhari if he does not take remedial measures to correct the man-made scams.
“It is inconceivable that the President will be on the records as mentioning so much money that he claims to have ssnk into the failed power sector but yet there’s no electricity anywhere in Nigeria.
“So, it is in his self enlightened interest that he fires the incompetent minister of power. This is because we have been experiencing weekly power grid collapse in the last three months that the current power minister succeeded the alleged corrupt former minister of power”, the group said.
HURIWA recalled that the national power grid has collapsed again on Wednesday.
The Eko Electricity Distribution Company confirmed that the grid collapse occurred at about 11:27 am.
“Dear customers, we regret to inform you of a system collapse on the national grid at precisely 11:27 am today, Wednesday, July 20. We are in talks with the Transmission Company of Nigeria to ascertain the cause of the collapse and a possible restoration timeline.
“We will keep you updated on the situation,” the Disco said via its Twitter handle on Wednesday.
The group said that collapse of the national power grid made it the sixth time this year, as reported on June 13 that the grid had collapsed for the fifth time in 2022.
“The collapse is expected to, as usual, halt electricity supplies to some parts of the country.
“Nigeria’s power grid had collapsed twice in March and twice again in April this year, as the power generation on the system had continued to fluctuate due to various concerns such as gas constraints, water management challenges, and gas pipeline vandalism, among others.
“In April, it was reported that the quantum of electricity on the grid crashed from over 3,000MW on April 8, 2022, to as low as 10MW around 21.00 hours the same day.
“The report further stated that another collapse of the grid occurred on April 9, 2022, as the nation’s power system collapsed to 33MW around 01.00 hours after it had earlier posted a peak generation of 3,281.50MW at 00.00 hours the same day.
“Also, the national grid collapsed twice in March and this happened within a space of two days, a development that made the Federal Government summon a meeting of stakeholders to address the issue.
“HURIWA believes that the problems with the national grid failures is purely and squarely corruption which the curre t administration seems comfortable accommodating”, the statement concluded.
