The Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly Funminiyi Afuye has died following a cardiac arrest, the state government confirmed.
“Rt. Hon Afuye died Wednesday evening at the Ekiti State Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado- Ekiti, where he was receiving treatment after suffering a cardiac arrest,” Yinka Oyebode, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Abiodun Oyebanji, said in a statement Wednesday.
“The late Afuye, 66, was a former Commissioner of the Ekiti State Ministry of Information, and a two-time member of the State Assembly.
“He was inaugurated Speaker of the sixth Assembly on June 6, 2019.”
According to the statement, before he died, the 66-year-old Afuye was receiving treatment after suffering cardiac arrest.
“The Government of Ekiti State regrets to announce the death of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Funminiyi Afuye,” the statement read.
“Rt. Hon Afuye died Wednesday evening at the Ekiti State Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado- Ekiti, where he was receiving treatment after suffering a cardiac arrest.
The late Afuye was a former Commissioner, Ekiti State Ministry of Information, and two-time member of the State Assembly.
The Ekiti Speaker died hours after he accompanied Biodun Oyebanji, governor of Ekiti, to inspect a bad portion of the Basiri road in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.
Oyebanji inspected the Basiri road on Tuesday.
A source disclosed that Afuye reportedly attended plenary on Tuesday before the unexpected turn of events and made an appearance at Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s inauguration on Sunday.
“This incident was both hilarious and shocking. We were devastated by the passing of Rt Hon Funminiyi Afuye, who was with us yesterday (Tuesday) at the House of Assembly. It was an unpleasant awakening.
The lawmaker added, “We learned he experienced unexpected issues this morning and was brought to the hospital where he died.”
Afuye, who served in the assembly from 2007 to 2011, was serving his second term, which was set to finish on June 6, 2023.
Afuye is said to have died days before his daughter’s wedding.
