Sports in Political Seasons: Hon Onyinyechi Ozioko Promotes Unity in Nsukka
In a bid to promote unity, football tournaments are being introduced in politics to bring together political parties as a means of enhancing peaceful environments ahead of polls. This was what a tournament tagged “Unity Football Club for Gburugburu” in Edem-Ani sort to achieve. The football competition was organized by Hon Onyinyechi Ozioko at Edem-Ani ward and was held at the Nweke Edem-Ani field.
She urged the youths to shun violence and inculcate the values of sportsmanship during 2023 electioneering process, saying that “This tournament is to kick against electoral violence in Nsukka Local Government, especially in this election season”.
Tournaments in election season first took place in Opi Nsukka Community, when the Assembly hopeful Nsukka East Constituency; Hon Barr Mrs Christiana Onah (Ijele Nwanyi) hosted the football tournament tagged “Gburugburu Tournament” – shunning political violence through Love and Passion.
In Edem-Ani, at the Nweke Edem-Ani field where Umuchiago FC defeated Odojo FC (5-0), the Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area, Hon. (Barr) Walter Ozioko (Okwuruoha), said before the kickoff that “Nsukka Local Government and entire Enugu State are assured of a fair tournament (election tournament) that will provide referees who did not support any political party, tribe (personalities of good conscience and Justice) will be in charge. We are assuring of a fair game in 2023.
“We will ensure a safe environment during the event by liasing with all armed forces during that period and also call out to all Political party leaders in Nsukka LG, Enugu state and of course Nigeria, to sign a peace declaration so we all work hand in hand to ensure peaceful tournament”, the Nsukka Local Government chairman said.
On his part, PDP state Assembly Candidate for Nsukka East Constituency, Barr Onah said, “I take this opportunity to call out to the youths to channel their voices with ours and spread the message of peace, love, sports, and unity. Sports is identified as a vehicle which accommodates everyone regardless of age, religion, political party and social status” she said.
In attendance; HRH Igwe Samuel Ikechukwu Asadu (Ogadagidi), Nsukka council boss; Hon Barr Dr Walter Ozioko (Okwuruoha), Hon Barr Mrs Christiana Onah (Ijele Nwanyi), Hon Mrs perpetua Agbachi (women leader – Ede-nta) and others.
