The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has released detailed public security features of the new N200, N500 and N1,000 banknotes that can help identify fake naira notes otherwise called counterfeit naira.
Since President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday, November 23, 2022 unveiled the new notes of the three highest denominations of the Nigerian currency, there has been reports that fake naira notes were circulating in the economy since December 15.
The unveiling was done at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, shortly before the commencement of the Federal Executive Council meeting.
The unveiling of the new redesigned notes hitherto slated for Dec. 15 was brought forward to November 23 by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The Governor of the CBN, Godwin Emefiele, who announced the shifting of the date on Tuesday at a media briefing to mark the end of the 288th Monetary Policy Committee meeting and the last in 2022, urged those in possession of the old notes to hurriedly deposit them at the nearest bank branch.
This, he said, would enable them to beat the Jan. 31, 2023 deadline to dispose of the old notes.
In a tweet, however, the CBN released the public security features of the new banknotes.
The CBN had said that the new banknotes are protected by some security features for easy recognition of genuine notes.
Some guidelines for Nigerians to easily differentiate a counterfeit naira note from a genuine one were pictured for naira spenders and receivers to differentiate the original banknotes from fake naira.
