2023: Group Set for Mega Endorsement of Candidates In Enugu
Ahead of the forthcoming general election, an amalgamation of civil society organisations and socio-political groups in Enugu North Senatorial district of Enugu State, under the aegis of Nsukka Democratic Movement (NDM), has concluded plans to adopt candidates for various positions in the state.
The coalition, comprising over 20 groups in the zone, including the Independent Nsukka Solidary Agenda Worldwide, United Nsukka Indigenes for Good Governance, Nsukka Arise for Change, Nsukka Youths Empowerment Initiative, Greater Nsukka Congress, Alliance for Democratic Governance, among others, insisted will unveils preferred candidates for governorship, Senate, House of Reps and the position of the President/vice-president, among others.
Confirming the development in a statement issued in Abuja by the Convener of the Coalition, Chief Willy Ezugwu, NDM maintained that it became imperative to get more involved in the choice of leaders for the zone.
“Time has passed when citizens remain docile while political actors alone decide who their leaders would be. All citizens must be involved actively in choosing leaders who will represent them in government.
“We need to carry out thorough assessment of the candidates and work for the emergence of the best hands as certain individuals have no reason to be in government.
“Enugu North Senatorial District, otherwise known as Nsukka zone, has been the most unlucky in the choice of their representatives, especially at the legislative level and that accounts for the current level of underdevelopment in the zone.
“This accounts for why the zone remained more like untouched despite the efforts of the current administration of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, who has consciously invested in the zone yet his deliberate effort to develop Nsukka has remained like a cup of water poured in the ocean because we have not extracted commitment from those we elected in the past.
“It is time to ensure that the right candidates who we can hold accountable are elected so that our zone can be close to other zones in the state if not better and we can no longer afford to depend on mere promises by those seeking lead at all levels from the zone”, the coalition noted.
The group, which did not give a date for the endorsement ceremony, said that a date will be communicated to the public in due course.
