Niger Coup: Turkish President Erdogan Rejects ECOWAS’ Military Intervention Plan
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said he’s opposed to military intervention in Niger against the military junta in the West African country.
He warned of the risk of instability in the region if Niger is forcefully invaded, a local newspaper, Niger Express reported.
Foreign military action, envisaged by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), would not be “fair”, Mr Erdogan told reporters accompanying him to Hungary on Sunday.
“Mali and Burkina Faso have also warned that such a military intervention would amount to declaring war on them.
“A military intervention in Niger would mean the spread of instability to many African countries,” he added.
The Turkish president added that he supported the return to “constitutional order and a democratic administration” as soon as possible.
“I believe the people of Niger will stand up for democracy and hold elections as soon as possible,” he said.
“As Turkey, we will continue to support the friendly and brotherly people of Niger”, maintained.
