Loud bang associated with an explosion has been heard in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, leading to suspected death of two people and destruction of properties.
Eyewitnesses told reporters in the ancient city that the explosion occurred at about 7pm, with the sound travelling very far.
Among areas affected by the explosion were University of Ibadan, Mokola, Eleyele, Felele, Bodija, Akobo, Secretariat, Jericho and Samonda.
Sources said that a shopping mall in Bodija, Ace Mall, collapsed from the impact of the explosion.
Also affected was Davies Hotel, which is also located in Bodija while Dominos in the same area was also badly affected.
The University College Hospital also had some windows and doors shattered.
Private residences were not spared.
The cause of the explosion was attributed to a gas station.
While some said it was from a gas filling station, others said it was a bomb.
Governor Seyi Makinde implored the citizens to calm down and rest assured that their interests are being looked after.
According to the commissioner for information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, in a statement released on Monday, security service chiefs including para military chiefs and Fire Operatives have been deployed by the governor to Reign in the spillover from the explosion.
The statement read “Residents of Ibadan and immediate environ experienced an uncommon explosion about 8pm this evening.
“There are various interpretations of the incident but it is important for us to state categorically that the state government has taken over and in the full control of the unfortunate occurrence in in order to mitigate the incident.
“All security service chiefs including para military chiefs and Fire Operatives have been deployed by the governor to Reign in the spillover from the explosion.”
