…Oyo State Government Says Security Agencies Investigating the Cause of Ibadan Explosion

Following reported massive explosion in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, reactions have trailed the incident which rocked residential areas in Bodija axis of the state capital in the late hours of Tuesday, 16th of January, 2024 as Gasland Limited confirmed that the source of the explosion was not from their plant. 

Gasland in a statement assured that their plant was fine and whatever happened was not from them, saying “No comment, However, we are all okay in Gasland. Whatever happened is not from Gasland Nigeria Limited.”

As of the time of filing this report, all relevant agencies have begun rescue operations at the scene of the incident. 

Oyo State Police Command via their official X handle confirmed that the explosion happened around Dejo Oyelese Street, Bodija and its environs at about 7:44pm on Tuesday, 16th of January, 2024. 

According to Police, the number of injured, and deaths is still unknown as the search and rescue operation continues.

The police assured of “ample deployment on ground”, saying that the “cause of the explosion is unknown. Number of Dead and Injured yet unknown as search continues.”

Meanwhile, Oyo state government has also called for calm as it assured residents of Ibadan that security agencies are investigating to determine the source and cause of the incident. 

A statement by the state government noted that “Relevant agencies are carrying out search and rescue operations at the scene of the incident. Residents of the State are urged to remain calm as the Oyo State Government is on top of the situation.”

Earlier reports said that among areas affected by the loud explosion were University of Ibadan, Mokola, Eleyele, Felele, Bodija, Akobo, Secretariat, Jericho and Samonda. This information is yet to be independently verified at the time of this report.
