Nollywood Star Amaechi Muonagor Dies At 61, What You May Not Know About Him

A Nigerian Nollywood actor and producer, Amaechi Muonagor, is dead. He died today, March 24, after suffering from kidney-related issues, diabetes, and stroke at the age of 61.

He was born on 20 August 1962 and would have turned 62 in August this year.

In November 2023, his cousin, Tony Muonagor, had revealed that the actor was battling with kidney disease, diabetes, and stroke.

The actor’s cousin said the photo was taken “two weeks ago” during a visit to Nnewi Teaching Hospital and that Amaechi had been managing diabetes until the recent escalation of his health issues.

Tony had expressed his initial intention to discreetly assist Amaechi but opted for transparency to provide clarity to friends, fans, and the online community.

Amaechi was undergoing weekly dialysis and other treatments at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital Nnewi, his cousin further disclosed.

In 2016, he was nominated for AMVCA 2017 Best Actor In a Comedy.

Amaechi Muonagor hails from Obosi village in Idemili North, Anambra State in Nigeria.

He attended St. Mary’s Primary School, Obosi, Oraifite Grammar School before he furthered his education at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) where he studied economics and graduated in 1987.

In 1989 after his youth service, Amaechi started working for News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He left his job a few years later for an acting role in his first movie as Akunatakasi in Taboo 1, a Nigerian movie.

Amaechi, amongst other Nollywood stars like Chinyere Winifred, Ebere Okaro, joined Dr Chris Eke of Word and Spirit Assembly, Ijegun Lagos as he marked his 40th birthday back in 2015, celebrating it with kikiri maximum prison inmates as well as children at the Hearts of Gold Children’s Hospice orphanage home.

In 2020, he said sexual harassment is not peculiar to Nollywood as it happens in every profession.

In 2016, there were numerous publications on websites that claimed Amaechi was very ill and suffering from diabetes. Since then, Amaechi hasn’t appeared or featured in any movie. There have been rumours about him leaving the movie industry.

He is married and has four children.
