A Democracy Unfinished: Nigeria’s 24-Year Civilian Rule Milestone Marred by Civic Challenges – PRP
As Nigeria commemorates 24 years of uninterrupted civilian governance, the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has said that it stands in solidarity with citizens nationwide, reflecting on the nation’s democratic journey.
In a statement signed by its Acting National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Muhammed Ishaq, the PRP noted that celebrating this landmark, the party acknowledges the resilience of Nigerians while recognizing the fragility of the current state of democracy.
According to the statement, the transition from military to civilian rule was a significant step, yet the anticipated progress in social democracy remains elusive.
The party added that the Nigeria has witnessed a troubling decline in civic freedoms and material prosperity, underscoring the reality that Nigerian democracy is an ongoing endeavour.
The PRP noted that recent general elections have highlighted critical democratic deficits: the commodification of votes, opaque electoral proceedings, and widespread voter disenfranchisement.
These issues, the party observed, strike at democracy’s core, necessitating urgent reforms to restore the electorate’s sovereignty.
The PRP called upon civil society, professional bodies, and local communities to confront these challenges head-on.
The party said that it’s time to galvanize the Nigerian people to demand accountability and improved governance from their leaders and institutions. Collective action is essential to revitalize democracy and ensure it benefits every Nigerian.
Championing a democracy that is participatory, inclusive, and accountable, the PRP invited all Nigerians to foster a culture of transparency and good governance.
The statement insisted that united efforts are crucial to shaping a prosperous future for the nation and its future generations.
The PRP maintained that on Democracy Day, Nigerians honoured the legacy of those who fought for our liberties, saying that their sacrifices inspire continued efforts towards a more equitable Nigeria, where every citizen can flourish.
The day, the party added, serves as a moment of introspection and hope, urging that together, let the citizens commit to constructing a truly democratic Nigeria, where the power genuinely belongs to the people.
