6.3 Million People in Need As Burkina Faso Faces Unprecedented Humanitarian Crisis

The West African nation of Burkina Faso is grappling with an unprecedented humanitarian crisis00, affecting millions of its citizens. Armed conflict, displacement, and food insecurity have combined to create a dire situation that demands urgent attention from the international community.

According to the United Nations (UN), approximately 6.3 million people in Burkina Faso are in need of humanitarian support and protection0. This staggering number represents nearly a third of the country’s population.

The crisis has been exacerbated by the activities of armed terrorist groups, which have disrupted humanitarian access in many localities across the nation.

The $935 million Humanitarian Response Plan for 2024 outlines the necessary interventions to address the crisis comprehensively. Unfortunately, it is currently 17% funded, with approximately $157 million received.

Member states and international donors are urged to provide additional funding to meet the urgent needs of those affected by the crisis.

Education for displaced children and psychosocial support for traumatized individuals are also crucial components of the response.
