The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has hailed the Supreme Court’s historic judgment granting autonomy to local governments, describing it as a victory for grassroots democracy.

This was contained in a communiqué jointly signed by Hon.
Barr. Sani Ahmad Haruna, ALGON Gombe State and Hon. Emiola Gazal B., ALGON Ogun State after its 48th National Executive Council meeting in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

ALGON expressed profound gratitude to the Supreme Court, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria Governors Forum, Judiciary, National Assembly, and other stakeholders for their support.

“This judgment is a victory for grassroots democracy and a testament to the tireless efforts of ALGON and other stakeholders,” said ALGON. “We are grateful for the support of the President, Governors Forum, Judiciary, National Assembly, and other stakeholders in this journey.”

The NEC advised council chairmen to promote harmonious relationships with other tiers and arms of government, in line with global best practices. “We must work together to deliver dividends of democracy to our people,” the communiqué noted.

The council also resolved to deduct outstanding membership dues from state chapters through the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) to fund national secretariat activities. “This will ensure that our national secretariat is adequately funded to coordinate our activities and provide necessary support to our members,” said ALGON.

The local governments in Nigeria appreciated private concerns and institutions that made presentations on local government development and pledged to collaborate for the benefit of the grassroots populace.

“We recognize the critical role of local governments in addressing insecurity, primary health care, basic education, water, rural development, and other critical infrastructure responsibilities,” said ALGON.

The NEC welcomed the appointment of Hon. (Barr.) Sani Ahmad Haruna as National Legal Adviser and expressed confidence in his ability to serve. “We have no doubt that his expertise and experience will be invaluable to our organization,” said Haruna.

In the communiqué, ALGON thanked Nigerians for their resilience and trust, promising to intensify efforts to offer responsive and responsible leadership. “We will not take your support for granted,” ALGON said.

It added, “We will work tirelessly to ensure that our local governments deliver on their mandate and improve the lives of our people.”
