President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appealed to Nigerians to suspend further protests and create room for dialogue, as the country’s economy begins to recover from decades of mismanagement.
In a broadcast to the nation on Sunday, Tinubu acknowledged the pain and frustration driving the protests, but warned that violence and destruction would only set the country back.
“My fellow Nigerians, I speak to you today with a heavy heart and a sense of responsibility, aware of the turmoil and violent protests unleashed in some of our states,” he said.
Tinubu commiserated with the families of those who lost their lives in the protests and assured Nigerians that his government was committed to listening and addressing their concerns.
However, he emphasized the need for dialogue and collective action to build a brighter future for the country.
“We must work together to build a brighter future, where every Nigerian can live with dignity and prosperity,” he said.
The President highlighted his administration’s achievements in the past 14 months, including increased government revenues, improved productivity in the non-oil sector, and significant strides in rebuilding the foundation of the economy.
He also announced various initiatives aimed at empowering young people, creating jobs, and stimulating economic growth.
Tinubu urged Nigerians to choose hope over fear, unity over division, and progress over stagnation, and assured them that his government was working hard to improve and expand national infrastructure and create more opportunities for young people.
In conclusion, he appealed to security operatives to maintain peace, law, and order while following necessary conventions on human rights.
