SERG Hails President Tinubu for Establishing South East Development Commission, Commends Igbos for Abstaining from Hunger Protests
The South East Revival Group (SERG) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing the bill establishing the South East Development Commission (SEDC).
The frontline socio-political pressure group in the region equally commended Igbo community, spread across South East, parts of Rivers, Delta, Edo, Cross River, Benue, Kogi and Akwa Ibom states, for their restraint and wisdom in avoiding the recent nationwide protests.
In a statement at the weekend, the group’s Publicity Secretary, Hon. Agu Chineme, SERG described the President’s move as “a historic step towards addressing the developmental challenges facing the South East region.”
According to the group, “The establishment of SEDC is a long-awaited answer to our prayers, and we are grateful for the President’s willingness to address the injustices of the past.” The commission’s mandate includes tackling erosion, promoting economic development, and improving infrastructure in the region.
SERG also hailed the Igbo community for their restraint and wisdom in avoiding the recent nationwide protests. “Their decision to dissociate themselves from the protests, which were viewed as anti-Igbo, reflects their deep understanding of the importance of peace and dialogue in resolving national issues,” the group said.
The SERG pledged its full support to the commission and assured the President of its cooperation in ensuring its success. “We thank President Tinubu for acknowledging the plight of the Igbo people and taking concrete steps to address our developmental challenges, demonstrating his commitment to unity and equity,” SERG said.
The establishment of SEDC is seen by the SERG as a significant development in Nigeria’s efforts to address the developmental challenges facing the South East region. “With the President’s assent, the commission is now poised to begin its work, bringing hope and relief to the people of the South East.”
As SERG noted, “The commission’s mandate to tackle erosion, promote economic development, and improve infrastructure in the region will bring hope, relief and a sense of belonging to our people.”
The SERG’s commendation of President Tinubu’s move is a testament to the widespread support for the establishment of SEDC in the region that has cried against marginalisation and abandonment since the end of the civil war in the 1970s.
