In a significant move to enhance the quality of engineering projects in the state, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has announced the domestication of the engineering regulations monitoring program. This development is expected to boost the practice of engineering in the state and ensure that only high-quality jobs are delivered.
Speaking during a visit by the President and Chairman of Council of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, NSE, Engr. Margaret Aina Oguntala, and her delegation, Governor Oborevwori revealed that the state had created the State Technical Committee and Delta State Expatriate Monitoring Committee in accordance with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering (COREN) Act. These committees will be responsible for monitoring the quality of jobs in the state.
The Governor congratulated Engr. Oguntala on her appointment as the 34th President and first female President of the NSE, noting that the engineering profession in Nigeria had witnessed remarkable progress in the last two decades. He expressed pride in the fact that local engineers in Delta State can hold their own against their foreign counterparts, thanks to the state’s commitment to capacity building and training.
Governor Oborevwori also highlighted his administration’s zero-tolerance policy for sub-standard jobs, citing the appointment of a competent company, Julius Berger Plc, to execute several high-profile projects in the Warri and Effurun metropolis. These projects include three flyovers, a cloverleaf, pedestrian bridges, and road expansion.
Engr. Oguntala commended Governor Oborevwori for his development strides and lauded the state’s efforts in capacity building for engineers. She emphasized the need for sustained training programs to enhance the skills and expertise of engineers in the state and offered the NSE’s partnership in this regard.
The NSE President also applauded the governor’s approval of Grade Level Nine (GL 9) entry point for engineers in the Delta State Civil Service and advocated for the appointment of qualified engineers to head engineering-related Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) in the state. She praised the implementation of an enhanced salary scale for engineers, noting that it underscores the administration’s dedication to promoting an environment where engineering professionals can thrive.
This development is a significant step forward for Delta State, demonstrating its commitment to quality and excellence in engineering projects. With the domestication of the engineering regulations monitoring program, the state is poised to become a model for others to follow in the country.
