Gowon, Jonathan, Buhari, Others in Attendance As Tinubu Presides Over Council of State Meeting Amidst Economic Hardship
In a significant move to address the growing economic concerns in the country, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu presided over the Council of State meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, bringing together a gathering of former presidents, state governors, and key government officials.
The meeting, which was attended by former Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Goodluck Jonathan, aimed to advise the President on policy decisions and address the prevailing economic hardship and protests that have rocked the nation in recent days.
The Council of State, comprising the President, Vice President, former Presidents and Heads of State, the Senate President, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, state governors, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the Attorney-General of the Federation, provides a platform for the President to seek guidance on critical national issues.
The meeting, the first to be convened by the present administration, comes at a crucial time when Nigerians are grappling with the effects of fuel subsidy removal and economic hardship.
Notably absent from the meeting was former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who had earlier expressed support for the protesters’ demands, describing them as legitimate.
However, it is understood that President Tinubu had specially invited ministers to address the Council on the policies and direction of the present administration, allowing members to gain a firsthand understanding of the issues before advising the President on the way forward.
The meeting, which was also attended virtually by former presidents Yakubu Gowon and Abdulsalami Abubakar, is seen as a critical step towards addressing the economic challenges facing the nation.
With the country still reeling from the effects of fuel subsidy removal, the Council’s advice and guidance will be crucial in shaping the President’s policy decisions and finding a way forward.
Nigerians eagerly await the outcome of the meeting, hoping for a resolution to cushion the economic hardship and a reversal of the fuel subsidy removal.
The President’s willingness to engage with the Council and seek advice is seen as a positive step towards finding a solution to the nation’s economic woes.
