New Constitution: The Patriots Address Concerns Over Engagement With President Tinubu, Reiterate Commitment
The Secretariat of the Patriots has issued a statement addressing concerns raised by some Nigerians, including a long-standing ally, regarding the group’s recent engagement with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on August 9, 2024.
The Patriots clarified, in a statement signed by its Head of Secretariat, Veteran Che Olawale Okunniyi, that their initiative to advocate for a new, truly federal constitution is a product of concerted and painstaking consultations, including a National Dialogue (Colloquium) in March 2024.
Mallam Tanko Yakassai, a respected elder statesman, had raised concerns about the need for wide consultations on the initiative.
The Patriots acknowledged his concerns, stating that they had diligently reached out to key members and associates, including Yakassai, before presenting their request to the President.
The Patriots emphasized that their position does not include details on the content of the proposed constitution, as they believe that the people of Nigeria should decide the content and outcome through deliberations and negotiations at the proposed National Constitutional Conference.
The group welcomed all Nigerians to offer their views on the proposed Constitutional Conference, reiterating that Nigeria’s current constitution is flawed, unitary, and undemocratic, hindering good governance and stability.
The Patriots asserted that the problems of governance in Nigeria go beyond the conduct of operators and are aided by fundamental flaws in the 1999 Constitution. They advocated for a coherent, democratic, and workable federal constitution that guarantees pluralism and peculiarities as a nation.
Experts and opinion molders have pointed out that the 1963 Republican constitution and the 2014 National Constitutional Conference offer a possible pathway to a truly federal constitution.
The Patriots agreed, stating that a new democratic people’s Constitution will inspire patriotic values and commitments from leaders and citizens.
The group encouraged Nigerians to engage in healthy national conversations, sharing their views and ideas to make the renewed intervention a success.
They cautioned against blackmail and throwing stones at citizens with differing opinions, emphasizing the need for inclusivity and diversity.
The historic delegation that met with the President comprised 19 members, reflecting the diversity of Nigeria, including Chief Emeka Anyaoku, Senator Ben Obi, Chief Simon Okeke, and others.
In conclusion, the Patriots reiterate their commitment to a new, truly federal constitution, emphasizing the need for wide consultations, inclusivity, and diversity.
They encourage Nigerians to engage in healthy national conversations, sharing their views and ideas to make the renewed intervention a success.
