#EndBadGovernance Protests: Organised Civil Society Tasks Tinubu on Dialogue, Wants Detained Protesters Released
Condemns Raid on NLC Headquarters
The Situation Room of the organized Civil Society has expressed outrage over the continued detention of key leaders of the recent nationwide protests against hunger and economic hardship.
The group, which monitored the protests under the auspices of the United Action Front of Civil Society, has called for the immediate release of the protesters, including Ms Angel Innocent, Micheal Lenin Adaramoye, Opaluwa Eleojo, Mosiu Abolaji, and others.
The Civil Society also condemned the raid on the Labour House, the National Headquarters of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja by security operatives. The group described the raid as “mindless” and based on “suspicion” that a wanted criminal was using the place as a hiding abode.
These were contained in a statement signed by its Head of Secretariat, Veteran Che Olawale Okunniyi.
The United Action Front of Civil Society has decided to initiate an independent civil probe to investigate the causes of the violence and deaths that characterized the nationwide protests. The probe will also examine the clampdown on civil groups and how to prevent future occurrences.
The group has demanded that President Tinubu order the immediate release of the detained protesters and initiate dialogue on the key demands of the protests. They warned that failure to do so could lead to an explosive citizens-government face-off, which would be detrimental to the economic well-being of Nigeria.
The Civil Society also tasked the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to ensure the safety and welfare of the 1,423 protesters currently in detention nationwide. They expressed concern over rumors that security agents plan to secretly eliminate the protesters, especially their leaders, to forestall future protests.
The statement emphasized the need for dialogue and release of the protesters to avert further unrest.
