CNPP Urges President Tinubu to Establish Special Court to Tackle Crude Oil Thieves, Corruption
The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to establish a special court to accelerate the trial of suspected crude oil thieves, corruption, and economic sabotage in Nigeria, saying “Nigerians can no longer bear the burden of the failure of the government to address these challenges.”
“We are compelled to call on President Tinubu to forward an executive bill to the National Assembly for the establishment of a special court for accelerated trial of suspected crude oil thieves, cases of corruption, and economic sabotage in Nigeria,” said Comrade James Ezema, Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the CNPP. “This move is necessary to save the economy and minimize suffering as a result of increasing taxation in the country.”
According to the CNPP, the persistent revenue leakages in the country have led to increments in taxes and incessant hikes in petrol pump prices, causing suffering for Nigerians. “Until a special court is established to address these issues, Nigerians will continue to bear the burden of the failure of the government to address these challenges,” the CNPP added.
The proposed special court should be mandated to limit the period of prosecution to not more than six months, ensuring that justice is served swiftly and efficiently. “This will ensure that justice is served swiftly and efficiently, and Nigerian people will not be made to fund the luxury of offenders,” the CNPP emphasized.
Furthermore, the agency responsible for the prosecution of offenders at the new court should also deploy advanced technology to tackle crude oil theft, economic sabotage, and corruption.
“The agency saddled with the new responsibilities under the bill should be made to deploy advanced technology in dealing with crude oil theft, economic sabotage, and corruption,” the CNPP said.
The CNPP insists that Nigerian people should not fund the luxury of offenders who have reduced accruable revenues to near zero and misappropriated funds meant for the masses. “We insist that Nigerian people should not be made to fund the luxury of offenders, who have continually reduced accruable revenues to the Federal Government of Nigeria to near zero and misappropriated funds meant for the welfare of the masses,” the CNPP stated.
