The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested Omoyele Sowore, the convener of the #RevolutionNow Movement, upon his arrival at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. Sowore was detained on Sunday immediately after his flight from the United States landed at the airport.

The activist had been in the United States with his family and announced his intention to return to Nigeria soon. His arrest was anticipated after a leaked DSS memo revealed plans to detain him upon arrival.

Sowore had earlier criticized the DSS for issuing a directive for his arrest, highlighting the agency’s inability to effectively track and apprehend terrorism suspects, bandits, and kidnappers. He emphasized the need for liberation and salvation in Nigeria, stating his intention to return home soon.

The DSS directive to arrest Sowore stemmed from his role in the recent 10-day #EndBadGovernance protests. The agency, under the newly appointed Director General, Adeola Ajayi, had instructed airport security and immigration authorities to intercept and detain Sowore upon his arrival.

Sowore’s arrest has sparked concerns about the government’s stance on freedom of expression and assembly. The #RevolutionNow Movement has been advocating for political and economic reforms in Nigeria.

The DSS has not released an official statement on Sowore’s arrest, but his detention has been confirmed by sources. The circumstances surrounding his arrest and potential charges against him remain unclear.
