Calls for Collective Action
A nongovernmental organisation (NGO), the Asylum and Refugee Rights Advocacy Foundation, also known as Asylum And Refugee Rights Advocates (ARRA), has attributed the global refugee crisis to poor leadership and governance, calling for collective action to address the root causes of conflict and instability.
“Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed guests, and fellow advocates, we gather here today to address a pressing global issue that requires immediate attention and collective action,” said Dr. Okey Ezugwu Esq., Founder and Executive Director of ARRA.
According to Dr. Ezugwu, “The crisis of conflict, persecution, poverty, and political instability has forced millions to flee their homes in search of safety and a better life. If most governments of the world provide the right leadership, the challenges faced by asylum seekers and refugees would be minimized.”
ARRA highlighted the alarming statistics of refugees and asylum seekers worldwide, with over 26 million people displaced, mostly from Syria, Venezuela, Afghanistan, South Sudan, and Myanmar.
Dr. Ezugwu emphasized the need for humane treatment, saying, “Asylum seekers, refugees, and migrants deserve humane treatment, regardless of the applicable laws. They should be treated first as human beings, with dignity and respect, in their host countries and communities.”
He further stated, “We recognize the impact of conflicts of law situations and aim to advocate for humane treatment and protection of their lives. We hope to provide legal support to asylum seekers and refugees whose rights are under threats.”
ARRA called on governments, international organizations, and civil society to:
“Address the root causes of conflict and instability. Ensure humane treatment of asylum seekers, refugees, and migrants. Provide access to legal representation and fair trials. Increase funding for refugee support and resettlement programs. Promote inclusive and sustainable development in countries of origin.”
Dr. Ezugwu concluded, “We will continue to push for humane treatment, fair policies, and sustainable solutions. Together, we can make a difference and create a better world for all.”
