AASU Commends Nigeria’s Giant Leap Towards Economic Independence with Dangote Refinery Aviation Fuel Deal
The All-Africa Students’ Union (AASU) has commended the Federal Government of Nigeria for its strategic decision to designate Dangote Refinery as the sole supplier of Jet A1 fuel to the aviation sector. The continental student union noted that the landmark move is expected to yield substantial economic benefits and cement Nigeria’s position as a leader in economic development.
“This decision marks a significant milestone in the nation’s economic and industrial development,” said H.E. Osisiogu Osikenyi E., President of AASU. “By sourcing Jet A1 fuel exclusively from Dangote Refinery, Nigeria stands to save a considerable amount of foreign exchange, thereby reducing the pressure on the naira and stabilizing the national currency.”
According to Osikenyi E., the exclusive supply arrangement will also bring about cost efficiencies for airline operators. “By sourcing fuel locally, airlines can mitigate the volatility associated with international crude oil prices, leading to more predictable and stable operational costs,” he noted.
The African students body observed that the move aligns with the Federal Government’s broader economic strategy to enhance local production and self-sufficiency. “The operationalization of Dangote Refinery as the sole supplier of Jet A1 fuel is anticipated to spur job creation and foster industrial growth,” Osikenyi E. explained.
This development is also expected to have environmental benefits by reducing the carbon footprint associated with the transportation of imported fuel. Moreover, it enhances Nigeria’s energy security, ensuring a reliable and consistent supply of aviation fuel.
AASU applauded the visionary leadership of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led Federal Government and the collaborative spirit of aviation stakeholders. “We believe that this initiative will serve as a model for other African nations, demonstrating the power of strategic partnerships and local resource utilization in achieving economic independence and prosperity,” concluded Osikenyi E.
AASU maintained that with this deal, Nigeria takes a significant step towards economic independence, saying that it remains committed to supporting policies that drive economic growth, industrial development, and sustainable progress across the continent.
As H.E. Osikenyi emphasized, “This decision is a testament to the President Tinubu administration’s commitment to enhancing local production and self-sufficiency.”
