Sokoto State Grapples with Banditry: Council Chairman Reveals Alarming Trend

Spread the love

In a shocking revelation, Alhaji Sharifu Kamarawa, Chairman of Isa Local Government Area in Sokoto State, has disclosed that bandits have taken control of appointing and dismissing village heads in certain communities within the council area.

This disturbing trend was brought to light during a visit from the Minister of State for Defence, Alhaji Bello Matawalle, to eastern Isa, Sabon Birni, and Goronyo local government areas.

The bandits, led by notorious leader Kachalla Bello Turji, have been wreaking havoc in these areas, leaving residents in a state of fear and uncertainty. Kamarawa appealed for the reinstatement of a military camp in Kagara, which was previously relocated, citing the relative peace that existed during its presence.

Although the killing of bandit kingpin Halilu Sububu has resulted in a significant decrease in attacks, some communities remain under bandit control.

Galadima, village head of Duroh, shared his harrowing experience, stating that he is the only resident who remains in the area, with others having fled due to fear of attacks.

However, there is a glimmer of hope. Jamilu Sanusi, a resident of Choi Mahe, reported that their community has not witnessed any bandit attacks in the last two months.

To combat insecurity, Minister Matawalle emphasized the need for cooperation between the Federal Government and North West states.

He assured residents of increased security measures, including the establishment of a military base at Gundumi and deployment of additional security operatives.

Matawalle stressed the importance of community involvement in the fight against banditry, urging residents to report any suspicious activities.

With President Tinubu’s commitment to addressing insecurity in the North, there is hope for a safer future for Sokoto State residents.
