The House of Representatives has taken a strong stance against the recent surge in petrol and cooking gas prices, calling on the Federal Government to reverse the hike and implement emergency measures to stabilize costs.

Hon. Aliyu Madaki, sponsor of the motion, emphasized the crippling impact of the price increase on Nigerian citizens, citing the exacerbation of the cost of living, inflation, and financial hardship.

“The removal of fuel subsidies, global oil price volatility, and the depreciation of the naira have contributed significantly to the rising cost of petrol and cooking gas,” Madaki noted.

The lawmakers expressed concern that the escalating fuel and gas prices threaten the livelihoods of millions, with far-reaching consequences for the economy, including increased poverty, social unrest, and negative long-term effects.

To address the crisis, the House urged the Federal Government to implement temporary price relief measures, tax reductions, or subsidies on cooking gas for low-income households and expedite refinery repairs and increase local refining capacity.

The reps also urged the Federal Government to explore alternative energy sources to reduce reliance on petrol and gas and implement monetary policies to mitigate inflationary pressures

State governments were also encouraged to adopt policies alleviating the financial burden on citizens, such as waiving taxes or levies on transportation and goods affected by high fuel costs.

The motion, supported by 110 lawmakers, underscores the urgent need for government intervention to protect Nigerian citizens from the devastating effects of soaring fuel prices.

As the nation grapples with economic uncertainty, the House’s resolution serves as a rallying cry for swift and decisive action.
