Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has approved a new minimum wage of N85,000 for civil servants in the state, significantly higher than the national minimum wage.

This development was announced by the Head of Service of the state, George Nwaeke, after a closed-door meeting with labour leaders and senior government officials.

The implementation of the new wage is set to begin immediately. Labour unions in the state have praised Governor Fubara’s decision, with leaders expressing joy and satisfaction with the new wage.

This move has cemented Governor Fubara’s reputation as a champion of labour and a leader committed to the welfare of workers in Rivers State. The new minimum wage approval is a significant development for Rivers State, demonstrating Governor Fubara’s commitment to improving the lives of civil servants and their families.

In response, Chukwu Emecheta, Chairman of the Joint Negotiation Team, praised Governor Fubara for fulfilling the expectations of Rivers State workers, commending his dedication to their welfare.

Similarly, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Rivers State, Alex Agwanwor, noted that the new minimum wage would immensely ease the economic challenges faced by workers in the state.

President Bola Tinubu had signed the National Minimum Wage Amendment Bill 2024 into law on July 29, 2024. The new law set the minimum wage at N70,000 and makes it reviewable every three years.
