Lagos Council Chairman Makes Dramatic U-Turn, Apologizes to State Assembly
In a stunning reversal, suspended Alimosho Local Government Area Chairman, Jelili Sulaimon, has tendered a heartfelt apology to the Lagos State House of Assembly for his past actions.
Jelili’s apology, contained in a letter personally signed and addressed to Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, was read on the floor of the House on Tuesday. This marks a significant shift in Jelili’s stance, coming nearly a month after his suspension for non-compliance, defiance, and unyielding attitude towards the legislative House.
Excerpts from Jelili’s Apology Letter:
“I am writing to express my most sincere and heartfelt apology for any actions or inactions, misrepresentation or conduct on my part that may have contributed to the recent misunderstanding between myself and the esteemed Lagos State House of Assembly under your leadership.”
Jelili acknowledged that his conduct may have been perceived as disrespectful and expressed regret for any discomfort or displeasure caused. He also assured the House of his commitment to fostering a more constructive and respectful relationship going forward.
In a further gesture of goodwill, Jelili informed the House that he has withdrawn the suit he filed against the Assembly before a Federal High Court in Abuja.
“I have always held the Lagos State House of Assembly and your esteemed office in particular, in the highest regard. Any action or miscommunication that may have suggested otherwise was an unfortunate oversight on my part,” Jelili wrote.
The House is yet to debate Jelili’s letter, but this apology raises questions about his potential reinstatement.
Will this gesture of goodwill be enough to repair relations between Jelili and the Assembly, or will more concrete actions be required? The outcome remains uncertain.
