Again, Power Outage Hits Nigeria as National Grid Experiences Partial Disturbance
Again, a partial disturbance in the national grid occurred at 1:52 pm on November 5, 2024, causing widespread power disruptions across Nigeria after three reported incidents of national grid collapse in October alone.
According to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the disturbance resulted from multiple line and generator trippings, leading to grid instability.
“The national grid experienced a partial disturbance…due to a series of lines and generators trippings that caused instability of the grid,” said Ndidi Mbah, General Manager of Public Affairs at TCN.
Despite the disruption, TCN engineers swiftly responded to restore bulk power supply. “TCN engineers are already working to quickly restore bulk power supply to the states affected by the partial disturbance,” Mbah assured.
Significant progress has been made, with Abuja’s power supply restored at 2:49 pm. “We are gradually restoring [power] to other parts of the country,” Mbah added.
The TCN apologized for the inconvenience caused by the disturbance. “We sincerely apologize for every inconvenience this may cause our electricity customers,” Mbah stated.
The company is working tirelessly to fully restore power and minimize future disruptions. As Ndidi Mbah emphasized, TCN remains committed to providing reliable electricity supply to Nigerians.
The National Control Centre (NCC) reported that a portion of the grid remained unaffected, mitigating the impact of the disturbance. TCN continues to upgrade and reinforce the national grid to prevent similar incidents and ensure uninterrupted power supply.
The Street Reporters Newspaper reports that Nigeria’s national grid collapse in October alone was quite frequent, with three reported incidents. The most notable one occurred on October 14, 2024, marking the seventh time the grid had collapsed that year.
This incident was followed by a partial failure the next day and another disturbance on October 19, which narrowly avoided a complete collapse. These recurring disruptions highlight the persistent challenges in Nigeria’s power sector, including aging infrastructure, poor maintenance, and insufficient power generation capacity.
In fact, the Nigerian national grid has collapsed nine times in 2024 alone. The frequency of these collapses has significant economic implications, affecting businesses and households alike.
To address these issues, experts recommend decentralizing the grid, improving energy mix, and increasing investment in renewable energy sources.
