Grid Collapse Today: Nigeria’s Transmission Company Confirms National Grid Disturbance, Gives Update on Ongoing Repair Works
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed a disturbance on the national grid, which occurred at approximately 11:29 am today, due to a sudden frequency spike.
According to TCN, recovery efforts commenced immediately, with the Abuja Axis restored within 28 minutes. However, recovery is still ongoing for other affected areas.
The frequency spike was attributed to issues at one of TCN’s substations, which was shut down to prevent further complications.
Additionally, TCN is undertaking significant repair work on several critical transmission lines and substations, including the 330kV transmission lines along the Shiroro-Mando axis and major upgrades at the Jebba Transmission Substation.
TCN has also begun implementing recommendations from the investigative report on previous grid collapses, focusing on technical upgrades and strategic interventions to enhance the grid’s stability and resilience.
While acknowledging the impact of these disruptions, TCN assures the public that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the grid’s long-term stability. The company recognizes the vital role stable power plays in Nigeria’s socio-economic development.
“We understand the challenges posed by these disruptions and appreciate the public’s patience and understanding during this period,” said Ndidi Mbah, General Manager, Public Affairs, TCN.
“We are committed to improving the reliability of electricity supply and ensuring the grid’s stability”, she added.
TCN has continued to work diligently to address infrastructure damage, including vandalized transmission lines, to provide a more efficient and reliable electricity supply to the nation amid intermittent grid disturbances leading to national power outage.
