Tinubu Grants Matawalle, Other Nigeria’s Ministers of State Enhanced Decision-Making Powers
President Bola Tinubu has taken a significant step towards empowering Ministers of State, granting them enhanced decision-making powers. This move is expected to unlock the potential of these ministers and ensure they play a more substantial role in governance.
Dr Bello Matawalle, Minister of State for Defence, is among those who will benefit from this decision, along with other Ministers of State such as Bello Muhammad Goronyo (Water Resources and Sanitation) and Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi (Agriculture and Food Security).
At the Federal Executive Council meeting, Tinubu approved full oversight responsibilities for Ministers of State over agencies under their purview. This means they can now grant administrative approvals and make decisions within their areas of responsibility, previously sent to senior ministers.
According to sources, Tinubu was motivated by the underutilization of Ministers of State’s expertise and capabilities. The president aims to address this by giving them the right to make decisions and direct action within their areas of responsibility.
Hadiza Bala Usman, Special Adviser to the President on Policy Coordination, was said to have initially proposed this idea, which received instant approval from President Tinubu.
This change is expected to “unleash” the potential of all ministers, enabling them to contribute more effectively to the administration.
With the enhanced decision-making powers, Ministers of State will have a more significant impact on the governance process, and their expertise will be leveraged to drive progress in their respective domains.
This move marks a significant shift in the governing framework, empowering ministers to take charge and make meaningful decisions.
