Real Madrid Star Antonio Rüdiger Auctions Match-worn Signed Jersey To Support Pygmy Hippo Conservation Till 1 December
In an extraordinary charity initiative, Real Madrid and German national team star Antonio Rüdiger has partnered with Zoo Berlin and Catawiki to auction his signed, match-worn jersey to support pygmy hippo conservation in Sierra Leone.
The exclusive auction, running from November 19 to December 1, 2024, on Catawiki, features Rüdiger’s unwashed, game-worn jersey from Real Madrid’s recent win over Club Atlético Osasuna.
Additionally, fans can bid on unique experiences, including a private “Meet & Greet” with Toni, the pygmy hippo named in Rüdiger’s honor, at Zoo Berlin.
Other rare items up for auction include the colorful letters from Toni’s name reveal, the pool she took her first bath in, and a life-sized plaster statue of Rhino Betty, crafted by Berlin artist Rico Rensmeyer.
Rüdiger, who holds dual citizenship with Sierra Leone, emphasized the importance of conservation efforts, stating, “The habitat of pygmy hippos in West Africa is under severe threat… Little Toni and I are proud to be ambassadors, working together to protect this endangered species and its habitat.”
Zoo Director Dr. Andreas Knieriem highlighted the zoo’s commitment to supporting conservation projects, saying, “Our mission goes beyond caring for animals and raising awareness… We want to highlight the dire situation for many species with the enchanting images of our little Toni.”
Catawiki’s VP Collectables, Genevieve Tearle, expressed excitement about the partnership, stating, “We’re thrilled to partner with Zoo Berlin and Antonio Rüdiger for something truly extraordinary… supporting an important cause.”
The auction aims to raise funds for the Pygmy Hippo Research Project in Sierra Leone’s Gola Rainforest National Park, crucial for protecting the fewer than 2,500 remaining pygmy hippos in West Africa.
With Rüdiger’s support, this initiative shines a spotlight on the plight of pygmy hippos and the importance of conservation efforts. Fans and collectors can bid on these unique items while contributing to a vital cause.
