Rochas Okorocha Spotted at Africa Student Leaders’ General Assembly in Abuja, Delivers Strong Keynote Speech
In a surprise appearance, former Imo State Governor and President of the Rochas Okorocha Foundation, Senator Rochas Okorocha, was spotted at the Africa Student Leaders’ General Assembly in Abuja. This comes after recent rumors of his death were debunked by his aides, who confirmed that he is alive and well.
Senator Okorocha, who has been involved in various philanthropic efforts, including providing free education to students from across Africa through his foundation, was seen interacting with student leaders at the assembly. His foundation, established in 1998, has been providing support to orphans, market women, and other vulnerable groups irrespective of their countries of origin, tribe and religious affliction.
Senator Okorocha’s presence at the assembly highlights his continued influence in Nigerian politics and his efforts to engage with young leaders. As a senator representing Imo West senatorial district, he has been vocal on various national issues, including education and youth empowerment.
While speaking on the misconception of education and the key to Africa’s success, Senator Okorocha maintained that Africa has been misled to believe that speaking English or French is synonymous with being educated. “This is what I call the neocolonialism, a mindset inherited from our colonial past. English and French are merely languages, not education.”
He lamented that “We’ve placed more emphasis on studying these languages than on acquiring knowledge that can improve our economy and societies.
“Every society has been endowed by God with two gifts: human resources and material resources. Africa has been blessed with an abundance of both. However, the problem lies in the management of these resources.”
The distinguished politician and educationist noted that “Effective management requires access to adequate information. Once Africa acquires the necessary knowledge to harness its human and material resources, it will become the most successful and largest continent in the world”, he said.
He told the youth leaders to develop their minds and believe in themselves, insisting that passing English and Mathematics should not be the basis for gaining admission into universities, adding that all subjects in schools in Africa should be taught in native languages.
The Africa Student Leaders’ General Assembly provides a platform for student leaders from across the continent to discuss pressing issues affecting education and youth development. Okorocha’s attendance and keynote speech at the assembly demonstrates his commitment to these issues and his willingness to engage with young leaders.
