The Enugu State government has launched a statewide campaign to combat gender-based violence, marking the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
The event, held at the Post Primary School Management Board (PPSMB) headquarters in Enugu, brought together over 600 women, girls, traditional rulers, legal professionals, and activists united in the mission to eradicate violence against women and girls.
In her address, the wife of the governor, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, highlighted the state’s unwavering commitment to ending gender-based violence. Represented by the wife of the speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mrs. Chinyere Ugwu, the First Lady emphasized that violence against women and girls remains a pervasive issue that can no longer be ignored.
The 16 Days of Activism is a global campaign that runs annually from November 25 to December 10, aimed at raising awareness and driving action to end violence against women and girls.
The Enugu event was designed to mobilize the public and key stakeholders to take urgent and impactful steps in addressing the widespread issue of gender-based violence both in Enugu State and globally.
The event featured inspirational speeches, performances, and discussions, all focused on the need to act boldly and decisively in combating gender violence. A panel discussion brought together experts to share best practices, resources, and strategies to help participants take meaningful action in their communities.
Notable figures in attendance included Mrs. Rita Edeh, wife of the Chairperson of the Enugu State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), and the Chairman of the Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe Samuel Okechukwu Asadu, represented by Igwe Hyacinth Edeani of Amechi-Idodo.
In a related event, the First Lady of Enugu State, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, also flagged off the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence at Igbo-Eze South Local Government Headquarters, Ibagwa-Aka, under the theme, ‘United to End Violence Against Women and Girls’.
The Enugu State government’s efforts to combat gender-based violence are part of a broader commitment to creating a society where women and girls are safe, empowered, and free from violence.
It is believed that through initiatives like the 16 Days of Activism, the state is taking bold steps towards achieving this goal.
