AAC Demands Immediate Release of Unlawfully Detained Agidigbo FM Staff
The African Action Congress (AAC) Oyo Chapter has issued a strong condemnation of the recent unlawful arrest and detention of three staff members of Agidigbo FM: Olabode Anisoloja, Ibrahim Idòwú Ishola (Mogaji), and Obe, an IT student.
These individuals were reportedly detained as proxies for the main suspects, a practice that is explicitly prohibited under Nigerian law.
According to the AAC Oyo Chapter, the arrests violate Section 36 of the Police Act 2020 and Section 7 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015, which clearly state: “A person shall not be arrested in place of a suspect.” The arbitrary detention of these citizens is seen as a gross violation of their fundamental human rights and a blatant disregard for the rule of law.
The AAC Oyo Chapter has expressed deep concern over this practice, labeling it as worrisome and condemnable. They have called on the Nigeria Police Force to immediately cease such actions to prevent potential mass protests. The party demands the immediate and unconditional release of Mr. Anisoloja and the other detained staff members of Agidigbo FM.
In their statement, the AAC Oyo Chapter urged the Nigerian Police Force to adhere strictly to Nigerian laws, act with professionalism, and respect human rights. They also called upon concerned citizens, human rights organizations, and media outlets to join in demanding justice for the unlawfully detained individuals.
“The police should not make arrests solely to demonstrate their active duty; arrests must be carried out lawfully,” the statement read. “The individuals mentioned are workers and trainees of the Agidigbo station, where the organizer came for an interview. The Oyo police should know who to arrest and charge to court.”
The statement was signed by Kayode Babayomi, the AAC State Chairman for Oyo, who emphasized the need for lawful conduct by the police and the protection of citizens’ rights.
This incident has sparked a broader conversation about police practices in Nigeria and the importance of upholding the rule of law to ensure justice and human rights for all citizens.
