The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reaffirmed its commitment to combating cyberbullying and online harassment in Nigeria. Mr. Ola Olukoyede, Executive Chairman of the EFCC, represented by Assistant Superintendent Philip Ogunjobi, emphasized the need for collective action against online abuse during a paper presentation at the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) conference on Cyber Security Awareness and Best Practices in Abuja at the weekend.

The event was organised by the National ex-Officio 1 of NANS, Comrade Muniretu Isah, and it had in attendance stakeholders and cyber security experts, including the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Students Engagement, Sunday Asefon; National President of NANS, Comrade Lucky Emonefe; the President of the All-Africa Students Union (AASU), H.E. Osisiogu Osikenyi Enyinnaya; among other prominent students’ leaders.

According to the EFCC chairman, “Cyberbullying and online harassment have become significant issues globally, including in Nigeria,” Olukoyede stated. “The EFCC is committed to investigating and prosecuting cases involving financial crimes, including those related to cyberbullying and online harassment. As a commission, we recognize the devastating impact of cyberbullying on individuals, particularly young people, and we are determined to play our part in creating a safer online environment.”

The EFCC has established specialized units to investigate and prosecute cyber-related offenses. The commission also collaborates with other agencies to tackle cyber-related offenses.

Olukoyede noted that the EFCC’s primary mandate is to combat financial crimes, but it has made significant strides in addressing cyberbullying and online harassment, particularly when these acts involve financial exploitation.

“Cyberbullying is the use of digital platforms to deliberately harass, threaten, or humiliate individuals,” Olukoyede explained.

He added that “Online harassment encompasses a broader range of digital abuse, including stalking, doxing, and hate speech. These issues are particularly pervasive among young people and can have severe psychological, emotional, and even physical consequences.”

Olukoyede emphasized the importance of understanding the complexities of cyberbullying and online harassment. “It is essential that we recognize the nuances of online abuse and take a comprehensive approach to addressing these issues,” he said.

“This includes education, awareness, and enforcement. We must work together to create a culture of respect and empathy online”, he added.

Nigeria has laws and regulations addressing cyberbullying and online harassment. The Cybercrime Act criminalizes cyberstalking, cyberbullying, and online harassment, with penalties including fines and imprisonment. Olukoyede urged victims to report incidents and seek help, emphasizing the EFCC’s commitment to protecting Nigerians from cyberbullying and online harassment.

“The EFCC is committed to protecting Nigerians from cyberbullying and online harassment,” Olukoyede stated. “We urge victims to report incidents and seek help. We will do everything in our power to bring perpetrators to justice and ensure that victims receive the support and protection they deserve.”

The EFCC conducts public awareness campaigns to educate Nigerians about cybercrimes, including cyberbullying and online harassment. Olukoyede emphasized the importance of public awareness and education in preventing online abuse.

“We must educate ourselves and others about the risks and consequences of cyberbullying and online harassment,” he said. “By working together, we can create a safer, more respectful online community for all Nigerians”, he said.

Also, speaking, the National President of NANS, Comrade Lucky Emonefe, who graced the occasion, and other national leaders of the students’ body commended the National Ex-Officio 1 for initiating the awareness event and underscored the importance.

Earlier while declaring the event open, the organiser, Comrade Muniretu Isah told the participants that “As students, you are the future leaders, innovators, and change-makers of our society,” adding, “And as a student organization, it is our responsibility to provide you with opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive.”

She explained that the program was designed to protect students from cyber threats, which have become increasingly prevalent in this digital age.

“In this digital age, technology has become an integral part of our daily lives,” Comrade Isah noted, adding that “However, with the increased use of technology comes the risk of cyber threats.”
