The Hon Stephen Abraham Ajiya Campaign Council has demanded a formal apology from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Executive Committee, to Hon. Stephen Abraham Ajiya for initially releasing a communiqué adopting an aspirant against another, contrary to the party’s constitution.
The council made the demand in a statement jointly signed at the weekend by Hon. Alfa Nma, Director General (DG) and Mr Joseph Garba, Public Relations Officer (PRO) on its behalf, insisting that the action of the concerned state executive undermines the democratic process and disregards the rights of aspirants.
Recal that a petition filed by Hon. Ajiya on January 13, 2025 and addressed to the Zonal Chairman, PDP North Central Zone, had accused the PDP FCT State Publicity Secretary and her cohorts of plotting to manipulate the elective zonal congress of the party, prevent due process, and impose unpopular candidates without election and due process.
“The communiqué in question,” the council said, was “signed by Josephine Itoyah-Splendor, PDP FCT State Publicity Secretary on December 19, 2024, purportedly nominated Alhaji Abdulrahma Mohammed as the sole candidate for Chairman PDP North Central Zonal, contrary to the party’s constitution.”
However, in a recent communiqué released on February 6, 2025, the PDP FCT Executive Committee stated that “favouritism and imposition of aspirants will not be tolerated” and emphasized the need for transparent and credible processes to produce winnable candidates.
The council, therefore, urged the PDP FCT Executive Committee “to take immediate action to rectify this situation and uphold the principles of democracy and fairness by reversing the purported endorsement of an aspirant against another and tendering unreserved apology to the foremost contender for the position of North Central Zonal Chairman, Hon. Stephen Abraham Ajiya. Failure to do so may lead to legal action.”
Assuring of its commitment to a fair electioneering process, the council affirmed, “We stand firm in our commitment to ensuring a free, fair, and transparent electoral process, and we will not hesitate to take all necessary steps to protect the rights of Hon. Stephen Abraham Ajiya and the people of the North Central Zone PDP.”
