Barr. Shehu Jega Marshall, former Deputy National President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) and current ALGON Technical Adviser, has commended Katsina State Governor, Dikko Umaru Radda, for his unwavering support for local government autonomy by ensuring a free, fair and credible Local governments election yesterday.
Governor Radda, a former Local Government Chairman, has consistently advocated for the financial autonomy of local government councils, describing it as a significant step towards deepening democracy and bringing governance closer to the people.
Barr. Marshall’s commendation comes on the heels of the recently concluded local government elections in Katsina State, where Hon. Engr. Bello Lawal Yandaki, the ALGON National President, emerged victorious.
Hon. Yandaki, who contested in the Kaita Local Government Area, expressed gratitude to Governor Radda for his honesty, transformative leadership, and commitment to democratic principles.
Barr. Marshall also praised Governor Radda’s development initiatives in infrastructure, health, security, education, job creation, and empowerment. He noted that the Governor’s observance of the principles of separation of powers has been impressive.
Furthermore, Barr. Marshall commended Hon. Yandaki’s efforts to reposition ALGON, citing his capacity strengthening, multisectoral engagements, and promotion of inclusive relationships with stakeholders.
With the direct funding of local governments, Barr. Marshall expressed optimism about improved service delivery in the local space, noting that it will provide a competitive edge and open up ideas to build capacity and address development needs in rural areas.
