Nigeria mourns the loss of two prominent political figures, Dr. Doyin Okupe and Mr. Sunny Nwanganga Onwuma, whose deaths were both confirmed on Friday.
Dr. Doyin Okupe, a former presidential spokesperson and seasoned political strategist, passed away at the age of 72.
Known for his bold political stance and unfiltered opinions, Okupe served as Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Olusegun Obasanjo and Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan.
He also played a pivotal role as the Director-General of Peter Obi’s 2023 Presidential Campaign, though he stepped down following corruption charges.
Dr Doyin Okupe’s political career was marked by both achievements and controversies, including a conviction for money laundering in 2022.
Beyond politics, Dr Okupe was a physician and co-founder of Royal Cross Medical Centre. His ability to navigate Nigeria’s complex political landscape made him a respected yet polarizing figure.
Meanwhile, Abia State Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, Mr. Sunny Nwanganga Onwuma, passed away on Monday at the age of 61 after a brief illness.
Onwuma, who previously served as Commissioner for Transport, hailed from Ihie, Ugwunagbo LGA of Abia State.
The Abia State government expressed its condolences, stating, “We fervently pray that God Almighty grants his soul eternal rest and gives his family the strength to bear this irreparable loss.” Onwuma is survived by his wife and four children, with burial arrangements to be announced by his family.
The simultaneous announcements of their deaths have left the nation reflecting on their contributions to Nigeria’s political and social fabric.
